This makes cleaning difficult,and the rump steak is now overcooked.

you put sticks twigs etc from the bottom as well as the top. These seem to be still mass produced, amazon had some a while ago.
They have been around for hundreds of years, well before the irish fishermen designed the kelly kettle, or john hart patenting the thermette in nz in 1929.
